An uncommon market: Batibouw, Brussels

Article Abstract:

The Batibouw construction exhibition is held in Brussels, Belgium and attracted 590,000 visitors in 1991. The show was not affected by recesssion as much business is done in Germany and Holland. The range of products was wide with a majority of small stands. Features of the 1991 show that illustrated the difference between the Belgian and UK markets included filled cavity walling, renders and coatings, insulation and solid fuel fires. Computerised building controls for houses and environmentally sensitive products had a relativley low profile.

Reducing office overheating

Article Abstract:

Clear prismatic louvres have been installed on the Zentralsparkasse und Commerzbank headquarters building in Vienna, Austria. The louvres reduce direct solar radiation without blocking indirect light and thus reduce overheating. Installed on three sides of the building and divided into modules, the louvres are computer controlled to move in response to the angle of sunlight. Glass transmittance is 51%, almost double that of conventional louvres and tinted glass.
