Manchester buys to expand

Article Abstract:

UK's Manchester Airport has acquired East Midlands and Bournemouth International airports from National Express for US$350 million. The acquisition, which follows Manchester's purchase of an 82.7% stake in Humberside in Jun 1999, makes it the second largest airport operator in the UK, after BAA, with its four airports handling some 22 million passengers in 2000. Unlike BAA, however, Manchester, as a local authority- owned airport company, cannot make financial investments in airports outside the UK.
