Animals and men

Article Abstract:

Many of the 1930s zoo buildings were designed by Berthold Lubetkin, the leading Modern movement architect of the time, including the Penguin Pool at London Zoo, which is now a listed building. The designs attempted to provide for the actual needs of the animals. Other buildings include the Gorilla House at Regents Park and a series of related structures at Whipsnade Zoo. Zoos now face falling attendances and the future of the 1930s buildings is uncertain, because of costly repairs.

Designing for pupils can pay dividends

Article Abstract:

A 15 year old schoolboy discusses the importance of school design in terms of location, space, facilities and atmosphere. A good public transport system close by is essential and architects should consider access to sports facilities when planning a school. Lack of space can cause stressful situations, particularly in corridors and classrooms. Architects should be aware that young people care about how their school looks.
