Argentina's awkward transition
Article Abstract:
Argentina is to hold a presidential election in 1999, with President Carlos Menem scheduled to step down in Dec 1999. Financial markets have been affected by political uncertainty, and the economy has moved into recession. There is concern about whether the currency board, which has helped control inflation, is to continue, though candidate Domingo Cavallo has stated that he will retain the board. Menem has exacerbated the problem of political instability by seeking to continue for a third term.

A good day for Argentine democracy
Article Abstract:
It should be clear by the end of 1998 if the Alliance can consolidate their election wins over the Peronists and finally replace Pres Menem. Even if they succeed in electing an Alliance president, the Peronists will still be their biggest opposition bloc. Meanwhile Menem is still president.
