Asian view of human rights is beginning to take shape

Article Abstract:

A nascent Asian interpretation of human rights became evident from the regional human rights conference held in Bangkok, Thailand and the Bangkok Declaration of Apr 2, 1992 that ended the meeting. Economic development as a human right is the salient feature of this interpretation, in contrast with the Western tendency to view civil and political rights in an exclusively non-economic context. Respect for national sovereignty and protection against US-style urban crime are further aspects of the Asian and third world view.

New human rights commission in Indonesia is a step forward

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's effort to improve its international reputation for protecting human rights began in earnest when Pres Suharto ordered that a National Human-Rights Commission be established. Suharto also acted in preparation for the World Conference on Human Rights to be held in Vienna, Austria in Jun 1993. However, the new commission will mean little unless the Indonesian government gives it real authority.

US opens up human rights record to scrutiny

Article Abstract:

The US has ratified the UN convention on human rights, which will allow Asian jurists to examine the US record just as Americans have examined Asian countries' records. The treaty is the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which was signed by the US in 1977 but not ratified until the closing months of Pres George Bush's administration.
