Asians rip into U.S. paper mills: industry giants fight against cheaper imports from rivals in region

Article Abstract:

The US wood products industry is suffering from competition with Asian giants such as Asia Pulp and Paper Co. Four paper makers in Asia headed by the company have opted to sell low because of excess capacity brought about by the economic instability in the region. Thus, US manufacturers such as Boise Cascade, Fort James Corp, Weyerhaeuser Co and International Paper Co have opted to deal with tremendous losses by either shutting down their plants, trimming production or conducting maintenance shutdowns.

Standards are at issue in U.S.-Japan dispute over paper; row threatens to escalate as Tokyo's trade surplus continues to rise; is a new pact needed?

Article Abstract:

The trade dispute between the US and Japan, which could further intensify following the continued rise of Japan's trade surplus, has focused partly on the failure of US-made paper products to sell in Japan. US paper manufacturers have argued that access to the Japanese market for paper products has been minimal. Japanese manufacturers, however, argue that US paper producers are reluctant to put in new cutting machines to make the standard Japanese size.
