Atlas Copco suffers 37% drop in profit; stock skids 7.5%

Atlas Copco AB announced that its pretax profits for the first quarter of 1999 dropped 37%. The company's quarterly profits fell to 557 million kronor ($66.5 million) as its sales volume also declined. The figures were worse than expected. Atlas Copco is a manufacturer of heavy machinery based in Sweden. The company claimed that a negative shift in its overall sales composition led to the drop in profits.
