BAA names the practices that will design its future

Article Abstract:

Richard Rogers Partnership, Geoffrey Reid Associates, Percy Thomas Partnership, GMW Partnership, Pascall and Watson and Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates have been listed by BAA as the architectural firms which will supply all the architectural services for its infrastructure schemes in the period to the end of the 1990s. These firms will work with many different types of building, and have been picked for their potential to offer good design and cost-effective solutions. BAA plans to invest 450 million pounds sterling a year on average in infrastructure schemes over the next five years.

Heartbreak Hotel goes Dutch

Article Abstract:

Dutch architectural firm Biq Architecten is responsible for the renovation of Coronation Court, a slab block, and Langholme Heights, a tower block, in Liverpool, England. The firm has gained a strong reputation for restoring residential buildings without the need for the residents to move out. In the case of Coronation Court, it will build new bay windows on the west facade from the outside. The work is being undertaken in cooperation with engineering firm Ove Arup and Partners and quantity surveying practice David Langdon and Everest.

Art as an instrument of change

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Shillam & Smith has been involved in establishing a community-led vision for environmental and built projects in the Saltley and Small Heath areas of Birmingham, England. The practice decided to use art as a way of improving communication in the area, which suffers from high levels of fragmentation, and to encourage residents to think about the area in new ways. It established a number of art projects, and these have been successful in allowing large numbers of people to become involved.
