FORGING AHEAD IN EXPORTS
Article Abstract:
Forging finds application in automobiles, earth moving equipment and diesel engines manufacturing sectors. Most of its domestic demands come from the automobiles segment. This segment accounts for nearly three-fourths of the demand for forgings. As the automobile industry is facing a recession, forging firms in India are facing problems. The forging industry is made up of closed-die forgings and open-die forgings. The closed-die units are growing by 13.5 percent per annum and the open-die units by 10 percent per annum. The forging industry in foreign countries faces threats as smaller and lighter aluminium and plastics components are becoming popular. Automated forge units in foreign countries have specialised in only certain types of forgings. India faces price competition from countries like China. India's success in the exports of forgings depends on meeting the client's changing delivery schedule and faster development of the product. India has only a few forging companies that are capable of meeting these demands of the buyers abroad. (gs)
