Indian Spices Board has pegged the export target of spices at 248,000 tonnes valued at Rs1,718 crore for 1998-99. Spices export for 1997-98 was 218,000 tonnes valued at Rs1,352.15 crore. Export of coriander declined to 7,000 tonnes valued at Rs13.09 crore (8,805 tonnes valued at Rs24.5 crore), while the export of cumin seeds dropped to 2,150 tonnes valued at Rs11.10 crore (3,276 tonnes valued at Rs16.15 crore). THE WONDER OF CORIANDER

The Spices Board had set a target of 15,000 tonnes for coriander exports valued at Rs33 crore in 1998-99, but this had already been surpassed by December 1998. Coriander exports reached 16,500 tonnes valued at Rs34.80 crore during April-December 1998. A new target of 18,000 tonnes valued at Rs36 crore has now been fixed for 1998-99. Exporters feel that exports may touch 18,500 tonnes in 1998-99. The main markets for coriander from India are the Gulf countries and the Far East. (khr)

The government of India has fixed a spices export target of 248,050 tonnes valued at Rs1,718 crore for 1998-99. India has achieved 55 percent in volume and 63 percent of the value in spices export till now. Spices Board has stated that between April and December 1998, India has exported 137,495 tonnes of spices worth Rs1,086 crore against 170,652 tonnes worth $999 crore for April to December 1997. India exported 228,821 tonnes worth Rs14.08 billion in 1997-98. (rk)(m)
