BP at war: Colombia
Article Abstract:
British Petroleum (BP)and other oil firms operating in Colombia have been the target of attacks by guerrillas hitting the oil firms' pipeline operations. The guerrillas are seeking protection money from the oil companies, which already pay an official 'war tax' of $1.25 per barrel in return for government security support and protection. Protestors claim that the oil companies' payment of the war tax has led to human rights abuses by government troops. The Casanare onshore oilfields of BP produces 300,000 barrels per day, with production expected to reach 500,000 bpd by the end of 1997.

Ailing, still
Article Abstract:
The Iranian economy has been hit by changes in petroleum prices which led to a government revenue shorfall of in 1998-1999 which accounted to a third of the government's budget. Conservatives argue thatthe economy is being neglected to expand social and political freedom, while the government argues that political reform is needed to foster economic growth. An improvement in relations with the US could mean a rise in foreign investment in the petroleum industry, which would help the economy.
