BP's net income rises 1.5% on sale of refinery, pipeline

Second-quarter net profit for UK petroleum company BP PLC rose by 1.5% to $7.38 bil. However, the increase was due primarily to asset disposals including a British refinery, noted industry observers, and without these factors the firm's underlying profit decreased from the prior year.

Second-quarter net profit for French oil firm Total SA dropped slightly to hit $4.66 bil, while revenue fell by 6.3%. Refining margins improved and output increased; however they were insufficient to counteract a weaker US dollar.
