A number of trends characterize the European bakery products industry. Busy lifestyles, increased snacking and the emphasis on healthy eating has fueled demand for bakery products. The cake and pastry market also enjoys sustained growth due consumers' occasional purchases to treat themselves. In-store bakeries and bread shops are being used by supermarkets to gain customers. Backgrounds on major manufacturers are presented.

Article Abstract:

Bakery market sales in 1995 totalled 2.96 billion t, worth about 3.88 billion pounds sterling, up 1.6% on 1994. The growth in sales is attributed to in-store bakeries and own-brand products. Cakes and pastries have increased growth of 10.5% over five years. By quantity, more bread is sold though cakes and pastries have a higher value. By 2000, the market is expected to be worth 4.0 million pounds sterling.

Telephony has grown rapidly in total spending from 2% in 1991 to 48% in 1996. During 1996 nearly 700 million pounds sterling will be spent on cable television and telephony services. Although cable users tend to be male, families are becoming a significant market for targeting. Cable telephony operators will expand with cable modems ensuring themselves a place in the Internet Service Providers market.
