Germany is very upset with the high tariff the European Community has placed on bananas from Latin American countries. For years bananas from the Caribbean have been protected by Europe on the grounds that such favoritism deters these islands from drug trafficking.

The European Community (EC) is attempting to standardize the fruit industry and classify all fruit and plants that can be traded across international borders. The number of fruits commercially available in Europe could be far less than the number grown there.
