Bankers dismiss short-termism jibes
Article Abstract:
UK industry leaders have dismissed criticism that the recent high level of acquisitions shows a short-term view. The UK is now seeing one of the most concentrated periods of merger and acquisition activity in the 1990s, and many companies are looking at potential acquisition targets. Critics argue that takeover reduces the critical mass of the industry and that high levels of takeover activity force companies into making excessively high dividend payments in order to retain the support of shareholders.

How UK plc will spend its cash pile
Article Abstract:
Acquisition activity in the United Kingdom will continue to be boosted by the high level of cash flow surplus in the corporate sector. Downsizing and restructuring activities has led to many firms gaining excess cash and improved liquidity. A cash surplus has also arisen from the strengthening business activities of many firms and improved confidence among top executives. Some expect the levels of share buy-backs and dividends to increase as well as the number of acquisition and merger transactions.
