Basques abound
Article Abstract:
Basque traditions are being celebrated in Elko, Nevada, in Jul 1999. There are some 50,000 Basques in the US, and immigration from the Basque country took off after 1870s, with California, Idaho, Nevada, oregon, Montana and Wyoming attracting sheep herders due to unclaimed public land in those states. Sheep farming became less popular after 1945, and few Basques work in the industry in the 1990s. Boise and Reno are towns with a concentration of Basques.
