Beijing rules: China's state-owned enterprises

China's state-owned companies have had little expected of them over the years, but since the Feb 1997 death of Deng Xiaoping Chinese leaders have begun to crack down on the poorly-run companies. Many of the consistently unprofitable ones will be allowed to go out of business.

Many innovative Chinese earn bonuses to their salary to encourage growth. Winning olympic athletes get the biggest bonuses, but scientists and engineers earn them too. Teachers and artists are generally the most poorly paid Chinese.
