Berlin picks its Olympic squad

Article Abstract:

Berlin has announced the winners of competitions to design two sports stadia for the city's bid for Olympics 2000. The competitions were open to German architects and by invitation to others. French architect Dominique Perrault won the competition for the swimming pool and velodrome. The site is in East Berlin's Prenszlauer Berg quarter and the buildings are placed underground with the roofs creating grass lakes in parkland. German architect Joppien-Dietz won the competition for boxing and judo halls. The buildings will be built even if Berlin is not chosen as the Olympic venue.

Timber frame renews the city

Article Abstract:

A competition for the design of a housing development using timber frame construction was won by PCKO Architects. PCKO's design has been built on an inner city site in Swansea, Wales. The development of houses and apartments for rent makes use of prefabricated timber structures in a traditional layout on an exposed site. The built estate maintains the character of the original competition design although it was constructed on a design and build basis. It has prompted the planning of other inner-city developments.
