Many tactical investors advise ignoring individual stocks in favor of market direction positions taken through Asian stock-index options and futures. These derivatives make it easier to be in the right place at the right time, and options can reduce risk as well. One popular variation is the guaranteed fund, which promises to return at least the original amount but profits less from late rises than from early ones. More traditional experts say betting on the market direction is too risky for retail or casual investors.

Article Abstract:

Investors in East Asian infrastructure projects and companies are finding funds easier to raise than good investment prospects. Major funds and companies involved include Peregrine Investments, Asian Infrastructure Fund, Global Power Fund, and American International Group. Some institutional investors find their priorities are at odds with those of developers and equipment suppliers. Furthermore, persuading banks and others remains a major roadblock. Asia's infrastructure may take longer to build than planned.

The Mexican currency crisis in the end of Dec 1995 has weakened currencies and cut share prices throughout Asia because both are termed 'emerging markets.' However, the fundamental strength of most Asian currencies, including foreign exchange reserves and the use of foreign money to fund investment, should shield them from further damage. Fund managers' assessments are mixed but many anticipate resurging markets after the first quarter of 1995.
