Article Abstract:

British Rail will be unable to bid for an initial three passenger franchises to be sold as part of a plan by the UK government to privatise the railroad system. The privatization includes the setting up of franchises using rented trains, in addition to companies which own the trains, and Railtrack, scheduled for privatization in 1996. An explanatory document of 217 pages in length is sent with bid invitations, and franchise holders are warned that the UK Labor Party is committed to public ownership of railroads.

Brazilian petrochemical firms for sale

Article Abstract:

The National Privatisation Council in Brazil is to privatise five petrochemical companies, including Petroquimica de Camacari (CPC), Salgema, CQR, Estireno do Nordest and Polipropileno. Prices have also been set for two stretches of RFFSA, the federal railway company, which will be leased for 30 years from 1996.

The transformation of Australian rail

Article Abstract:

The Australian railway industry is being privatized, but its infrastructure is in dire need of repair. The government has done little to invest in capital expenditures to improve or maintain the rail system. Fortunately, privatization is driving renewed interested in the railways.
