Commercial banks used to be able to count on their credit card services generating a lot of income, but profits from credit cards have slowed. Consumers are not using them as freely as they used to and now banks are faced with competition from other institutions offering credit cards.

Many US banks yearn to follow Europe's example and sell insurance policies at their retail branches. Branch-based sales are shown to be more effective than agents, but federal and state restrictions and the powerful insurance lobby make it legally difficult.
