Border watch

Article Abstract:

An expected economic slowdown in China may have an adverse effect on Hong Kong's economy. Hong Kong's yearly exports to China have steadily increased, and 1993 may surpass the 1992 volume of its exports to the US. Furthermore, many of China's exports, which are channeled through Hong Kong, give the country's economy an extra boost. The downturn is not expected to affect Hong Kong until late 1993, if at all. Hong Kong's property market and tourism industry continue to improve despite signs of a downturn in international trade.

Realigning the stars

Article Abstract:

Australian media baron Rupert Murdoch hopes to gain access to Asia's market for Chinese-language television programming through a deal in which his firm, News Corp, will acquire a 22% stake in Television Broadcasts (TVB), Hongkong's leading television company. The Jun 15, 1993 agreement between News Corp and TVB may lead to intense competition between TVB's new consortium and StarTV, Asia's only satellite television network. The consortium links TVB with Turner Broadcasting System and other US programmers.
