Brawling in the ring: US and China take off the gloves

Article Abstract:

The strained relations between China and the US have been aggravated by the the decision of Pres George Bush to sell F16 fighter planes to Taiwan. Previously, the two countries exchanged trade restriction threats. The US released on Aug 21 1992, a list of goods from China valued at $3.9 billion which may be subjected to excessive import duties. China reacted by issuing its own list of items made in the US worth $4 billion which may also be heavily taxed. The situation nearly reached breaking point when the US learned that China entered into an agreement with Iran to help each other strengthen their respective nuclear capabilities.

China's international standing suffered badly after it forced dissident union organizer Han Dongfang to leave the country on Aug 14, 1993. The US, the UK and Hongkong denounced the expulsion as a violation of human rights, with US officials warning that the action endangered China's most favored nation trading status. Han, whom the Chinese government described as a supporter of China's detractors, founded an independent labor union in 1989. China expelled him one day after his return and made him stateless on Aug 21 by cancelling his passport.

Stuck in first gear: Chinese province blocks Sea-Land truck license

Article Abstract:

Guangdongprovince in China has prohibited Sea-Land Services Inc from venturing into the region's trucking market to the dissatisfaction of US officials. Sea-Land claims that a shipping accord between Washington and Peking last Sep 1992, afforded a trucking license which would allow Sea-Land to operate between Hong Kong and Canton. The licensing refusal might lead to trade sanctions such as USport access refusal to Chinese shippers. The conflict could also affect the most-favored-nation issue concerning China.
