A six-member Tory majority on the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee rushed to judgement in the aftermath of the Dunblane massacre by rejecting a ban on the private possession of handguns. Their judgement was condemned immediately and made the Tories look incredibly insensitive.

The British Tory Party now seems to be in an ideological vacuum as the post-Thatcher period continues. Conservative think tanks throughout Britain are bereft of fresh ideas and splits within the party have cast a shadow over its future.
