Brown and pleasant land

Article Abstract:

A housing development in London, England, offers a solution for achieving brownfield building targets. The development, designed by Levitt Bernstein Associates, is on the site of a former warehouse. The design uses some of the shell of the warehouse for four levels of small flats. This plan precluded any need to refer to the Unitary Development Plan. Levitt Bernstein also incorporated further houses within the original walls of the warehouse, and provided a space-saving communal laundry for some of the flats.

How consultation benefited a Deptford community

Article Abstract:

The renovation of three twenty-six storey tower blocks and associated housing known as the Pepys Estate in Deptford, South-east London, is reviewed. The project, costing 30 million pounds sterling, was funded by the Housing Investment Programme for the Borough of Lewisham. The buildings, built during the 1960s, required better lighting, security and maintenance features. Each were improved by the extraction of deck walkways and the provision of a well-lit, televised and secure, entrance lobby.
