Building thoughtful mechanisms; Lord Reilly lecture: Nicholas Grimshaw, 'Structure, Space and Skin'
Article Abstract:
Nicholas Grimshaw proposes that good architecture is more about the quality of detailing than style. He decries restrictive planning legislation which he sees as responsible for much poor architecture and the demise of innovative private house design. Grimshaw sees buildings as adaptable mechanisms which have life and the potential to change. Grimshaw's lecture was illustrated with examples of his work including the Financial Times print works, the UK pavillion for the Seville Exposition, Waterloo Station and the Western Morning News headquarters.

Building blocks for city children
Article Abstract:
Lower Treginnis Farm has been converted into a study centre for primary school children. The Nineteenth Century farm buildings have been adapted to provide accommodation while other educational and communal facilities are housed in new buildings incorporated into the courtyards of the farm. Niall Phillips Architects designed robust builldings which are attractive to the children and provide focal points which strengthen the sense of community. The Farm is owned by the National Trust and meets with its strict desing criteria.

Turning problems into a building success
Article Abstract:
Architects upgrading a studio and office development in a conservation area in east London, England overcame several problems with a dramatic design. The task was to improve and enlarge the facilities in Brune Street, Spitalfields within a reasonable budget. The existing converted warehouse buildings were demolished while retaining their historic facades. Height and profile restrictions were overcome by use of a glazed arch roof which provides good illumination to the offices inside as well as enhancing the elevation.
