Bully or Leader? 'Sorry' is the hardest word for Beijing
Article Abstract:
China's unwillingness to apologize for past actions, such as the support of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia in the late 1970s and recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary of its involvement in the Korean War, and view of its past actions as wholly just, have undermined its efforts to be seen as a responsible regional leader. The Chinese Communist Party wants Asia to revised its perception of China as a potential aggressor, but the party would have to revise its position on the past and its self-perception as peace-loving and a defender of its helpless people, who have been victimized by foreigners.

Ending dollar diplomacy in China has benefits
Article Abstract:
The absence of corporate involvement in US Pres Bill Clinton's visit to China is welcome news for US firms working in the country since it helps to lessen the firms' political role in China. That means the companies are less apt to be negatively affected when US-Sino relations turn sour. More importantly, the decision to de-emphasize business was in keeping with the US government's aim to focus the summit on noneconomic issues.
