Business schools change course to cope with latest flavour in business education

Article Abstract:

The growing demand from industry for executive education programs is forcing business schools around the world to rethink their curricula. Business schools will seek to maintain a competitive share of the executive education market as the demand for MBA degrees drops and companies begin to seek in-house courses designed to train executives based on specific organizational needs. Schools in the US are particularly being threatened by foreign competition, particularly from schools in Europe and Asia. Serving as a further threat to all business schools are the efforts of many major companies to establish their own executive education program through collaborative efforts with consultants and academics. Harvard University's efforts to improve its share of the executive market through its development of company-tailored programs as separate from individual programs is discussed.

Schools and the market: learning how to respond?

Article Abstract:

A quasi-market for education has emerged in England and Wales as parental choice has been enhanced and school league tables have been published. However, a number of features distinguish this market from a normal one, including the lack of a price or voucher mechanism and the fact that the government restricts new entrants. Competition in education markets has become focused on league table performance. This has fostered an environment in which schools target the most gifted applicants in order to secure their future examination performance.
