CNAC's offering may suffer from high expectations: lofty Hong Kong IPO price could limit room for gains for Beijing-owned holding company
Article Abstract:
China National Aviation Corp (CNAC), a state-owned holding company, will have an initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock market on Nov 7, 1997, in an effort to raise over HK$1.2 billion ($155.2 million). CNAC's Chinese connections and its 43% stake in regional carrier Hong Kong Dragon Airlines make it an attractive buy, said analysts. Some observers, however, are questioning whether a too high offering price would limit the stock's upside potential.

Few investors bet on recovery: after year of tumbles, economic aftershocks are on the horizon
Article Abstract:
Investment advisers predict that in 1998, Asia will be experiencing aftershocks of its economic troubles that began in 1997. Few investors are optimistic and most admit that they are reluctant to invest in Asia anytime soon. The devaluation of Thai, Korean and Malaysian currencies, coupled with credit downgrading and lagging economic reforms complicate the situation and investors predict that recovery will take a long time.
