Cable & Wireless wins bid for IDC with rich offer

International Digital Communications Inc., a small and unprofitable telecommunications carrier in Japan, will be acquired by Cable and Wireless PLC. IDC shares owned by Toyota Motor Corp. and Itochu Corp. were sold to Cable and Wireless after Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. dropped out of a lengthy bidding war. Industry analysts have said that the foreign acquisition represents a new phase of openness in Japan's telecom markets.

Rascal nears agreement to sell telecom business

Global Crossing Ltd. is close to an agreement to purchase Racal Electronics PLC's telecommunications business for $1.6 billion in cash. The acquisition would give Global Crossing a major presence in Europe. Global Crossing is building international undersea and land-based networks to handle growing Internet traffic. Racal has made it known that it wished to sell off its telecommunication business.

AT&T Canada, MetroNet will merge

AT&T Canada Corp. has reached an agreement with MetroNet Communications Corp. to merge in a C$7 billion (US$4.59 billion) deal. The merger would create a powerful coast-to-coast competitor in the fast-paced telephone market in Canada. The newly merged entity will be called AT&T Canada Corp. It will have approximately $1.4 billion in yearly revenues, 4,000 workers, and C$3.5 billion in assets.
