Call the phone companies' bluff

Article Abstract:

Telecommunications companies in Hong Kong have threatened to scale back their technology infrastructure investments if the government issues licenses to other companies. It is argued that the government should call their bluff and issue more licenses to open the market and promote competition. The government is also urged to improve regulations to control Hong Kong Telecom's market dominance.

First Pacific acquires dominant stake in Philippine telecom

Hong Kong-based First Pacific Co's managing director, Manuel Pangilinan, faces plenty of challenges after assuming the post of CEO of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT). He will have to consolidate the country's two ranking mobile-phone firms, Smart Communications Inc and Pilipino Telephone Corp, while addressing PLDT's troubled earnings.

Article Abstract:

The failures of U.S. and European telecommunication services companies in Asia during the early to mid-1990s are chronicled. Newer Asian companies invested in the region, such as SK Telecom Co. of Korea, are thought to have a better chance at success due to decreased regulations and the companies' committment to the region.
