Canned vegetables

Article Abstract:

Canned vegetable products in the UK are facing competition from fresh vegetable produce therefore the market value is predicted to decline from 266 million pounds sterling in 1996 to 221 million pounds sterling by 2001. The major supermarket chains sold 74.6% of total canned vegetable products in 1996, with some 36% of sales from own-label brands. Canned tomatoes have a 22.9% share of the market but sales have declined from 75 million pounds sterling in 1992 to 61 million pounds sterling in 1996. Some 49.1% of the canned vegetables products are imported, with 27.2% coming from Italy.

The UK market for canned vegetables amounted to 649,000 t in 1999, worth 554 million pounds sterling. Volume sales are set to fall by 4% to 623,000 t in 2004, valued at 508 million pounds sterling.
