Capitals of capital

Article Abstract:

The May 1992 Hongkong meeting of economic policymakers is postulated as a relaunch of an unsuccessful Japanese move to position for hegemony in Asia's capital markets. In spite of the previous banking and capital market deregulation initiatives, however, the Tokyo market could not favorably compete with other financial centers, such as Hongkong, Sydney and Singapore which became successful through deregulation. The healthy competition, effectiveness and economic viability of these financial centers may be restricted if the speculations prove true.

Ripples from Europe: EC's currency turmoil will affect Asia

Article Abstract:

Trade relations between Asia and Europe could be affected indirectly by the crisis raging within the European Monetary System (EMS). Since most primary commodities being traded by Southeast Asian countries are denominated in US dollars, the strengthening of the US dollar against EMS currencies will force Europe to pay more for Asian commodities. In addition, other countries within the region base their exchange rates on the US dollar and this will also have a similar effect on trade relations with Europe.
