Central European banks and stock exchanges: Capacity-building and institutional development

Article Abstract:

Capacity building and institutional developing within the banking and capital market industries in central and eastern europe are analyzed. Common institutional and structural problems of the 10 central European applicant countries for EU membership are identified. Privatization of the larger former state owned banks is likely to need equity from foreign banks and and from institutions such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which provides guarantees.

European competitiveness: bargaining between boom and gloom

Article Abstract:

It is now vital for the European Union to look at ways of overcoming its economic and political weaknesses. Attention should be given to adjusting competitive specialisation and to centralising political power. Within this approach, the management of internal and external bargaining plays a key role. In this way, market access could be internationally coordinated, allowing competitive specialisation to emerge.

Strategic reactions to the abolition of duty free: examples from the European airport sector

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the effect which the abolition of duty free sales to airline passengers in Europe in 1999 had on the retail income of airport authorities. Alternative means of generating retail income are discussed.
