Nigeria in civvy street

Article Abstract:

The new Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has carried out some reforms such as setting up commissions on corruption and human rights, and removing customs officials. He has a major task ahead which involves reconstructing Nigeria. Religious and ethnic loyalties, secret societies, mafias, and bribery have undermined the state. Parastatal industries should be privatized, and there should be adequate pay for civil servants. Economic progress is important, and other countries can help, for example through debt relief.

Reaching for your machete

Article Abstract:

Ethnic conflict in Nigeria has involved Yorubas and Hausas, and the government has been faced with riots. There are some 120 million people in Nigeria and some 200 ethnic groups. There has been a rise in killings which has been linked both to ethnic conflict and to criminality. Campus cult killings are more linked to criminality. Pessimists fear social breakdown, while others argue that most Nigerians are peaceful and aim to obey the law.
