Chaos theory

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong governor Chris Patten is having a difficult time in the media, especially since he turned down proposals by Hong Kong businessmen to accede to many of China controversial transition proposals. Governor Patten refuses to give in to these pressures, retaining his stance that the interest of Hong Kong goes first in any negotiations with China, especially in transition issues. Patten has to juggle the concerns of the incoming Chinese administration with those of the United Kingdom, which is seeking expanded trade with China.

Standing pat: Governor Patten won't bend to tycoons' pleas

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten is facing criticism from business interests and conflicts with the Chinese and UK governments as 1997 reunification nears. Patten is concerned about the continuing social responsibility that exists in Hong Kong. Acceding to Chinese plans to repeal human rights legislation, open confidential government records and dismantle the legislature would do damage to Hong Kong's social structure. Patten acknowledges that the Chinese chief executive for Hong Kong should be elected as soon as possible.

A matter of principle

Article Abstract:

Christopher Patten, Governor of Hong Kong, has criticised some Hong Kong executives for dealing directly with China. He appears to be referring to the granting of telecoms licenses, a delay in approval for a container terminal, and a land reclamation project. China argues that it is legitimate to listen to the views of businessmen. China has the final word on contracts that will not be finalized until after 1997 and this has opened the way for lobbying.
