China's Market-Leninism: a new focus for Peking-Washington relations

Article Abstract:

Sino-American relations have remained tense due to a mutual lack of understanding. Bill Clinton's ill-advised attempt at using trade policy to force China to improve its human rights record betrays a failure to realize that market economics offers the best hope for political liberalization in China despite the Communist Party's determination to hold on to power. Conversely, the Chinese government's recent bellicose actions, such as imposing a life sentence on a journalist who leaked a speech, make it politically difficult for Clinton to adopt a more conciliatory policy.

Great expectations: U.S.-China relations: the only way to go is up

Article Abstract:

The Oct 24, 1995, summit in NY between the Chinese and US presidents may yield little of substance but could lead to greater willingness on the part of both to accomodate the differences in their social, political, and economic systems. Washington continues to deny Beijing the respect it deserves, and China already has a history of nursing molehill slights into mountains. The Clinton administration's nomination of James Sasser as ambassador to China is only one example.

China welcomes Clinton victory; Beijing expects its relations with the U.S. to improve

Article Abstract:

Experts on Sino-U.S. relations say China has welcomed the re-election of President Bill Clinton. The election of former Senator Robert Dole, on the other hand, would have been cause for a re-evaluation of the relationship between the two countries already set in motion by the Clinton administration. In addition, the experts say, Clinton will not have to devote as much consideration to domestic political consequences since he is a lame duck president.
