China's generation gap

Article Abstract:

China's energy officials are aware of the energy crisis brought about by increased demand. Despite the scale with which new capacity has been generated in recent years, this has not been enough to keep up with rapid growth. Power shortage or surplus is usually measured in terms of system reserve capacity or the gap between peak demand and capacity. The adequate range of system reserve capacity is 15%-25% and China's is zero atthe present. Estimates made by national energy officials indicate that electricity supply must increase 20%-30% in order to meet increased demand.

Bucks and brass: China's PLA advances into currency futures

Article Abstract:

China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) is now operating currency futures market which is still considered technically illegal in China. These unauthorized brokerage houses are operating clandestinely while hoping that the business will be legalized soon in view of the reform program being undertaken by China. Regulatory legislation, however, is not as fast as the sprouting of these capitalist reforms. But it does surprise everyone that the PLA itself is in control of these money markets.

Rapped knuckles: China punishes France for Mirage sale

Article Abstract:

Paris is set to lose its consulate in Canton and has not been allowed to join in the bidding for Canton's subway system. These were imposed upon them by Peking for their sale of Mirage jet fighters to Taiwan. However, this contract is still to be officially confirmed.
