Christopher Cockerell

Article Abstract:

Christopher Cockerell is credited with inventing the hovercraft while experimenting with kitchen utensils. He patented over 70 inventions in his life time and the hovercraft is widely used by the armed forces. He could have become rich but was not an entrepreneur. He was not poor and acquired a boatyard following the 1939-1945 war, and this allowed him to carry out experiments and ponder an idea of generating electricity using wave power, an idea which has since come to be accepted.

Could this pig save your life?

Article Abstract:

Researchers are trying to genetically engineer pigs with human genes, whose organs can be transplanted into people. There are already 160 people who have been treated with pig tissue, and so far there are no signs of infection. Members of the Campaign for Responsible Transplantation believe that using animals in this way could lead to a global health pandemic. Of special concern is the porcine endogenous retrovirus, because it cannot be bred out.
