City slicker

Article Abstract:

A cut in the budget led the designers of a housing project for young people to reconsider the use of brick as a facia instead of the planed glazed panels. The inclusion of brick facia panels produced a natural glow to the building in the setting sun and enabled the designers to unfill difficult areas. The Focus Foyer building in Birmingham provides accommodation for up to 80 young people requiring help to make the transition between street and home living.

Cultra shock

Article Abstract:

Brickwork and steel materials were incorporated into the structure of the newly extended Road Gallery at the Folk and Transport Museum in Ulster, Northern Ireland. The large structure allowed the designers to include elaborate brick designs and gables to improve the exterior of the museum building, while brick work on the interior helped make the exhibits more realistic.
