Civil war without end

Article Abstract:

Civil war in Sri Lanka broke out in the early 1970s when Tamil groups sought to have their own state in the eastern and northern areas of Sri Lanka. The Tamil Tigers has been the strongest of the Tamil groups. Tourists may visit Sri Lanka and be unaware of a war. Martial law has not been imposed since 1915, when the country was under British rule, and life seems normal in many ways. An occasional catastrophe breaks out which means that the conflict cannot be ignored. The conflict could continue for many years, and the Tamils obtain funds from fellow-Tamils overseas.

Is inflation tamed?

Article Abstract:

US unemployment has dropped to just over 4%, yet inflation has not risen as had been predicted by some economists. This may be due to a drop in the natural level of unemployment, though Partenon Group's Roger Brinner sees four factors as contributing to low inflation. These are low import prices, low petroleum prices, lower health care costs and cheaper pension provision due to high stock prices. These are special circumstances, and inflation is likely to return when the circumstances change.
