Closing the deals

Article Abstract:

Albert Frere, an entrepreneur with a range of interests, has sold a 30% stake in Petrofina to Total. His other interests include steel and banking. He has reached the age of 72-years-old and appears to be planning his retirement. He will hold a stake of nearly 9% in Total and will be Total's biggest stockholder. He also holds a stake in Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux. This is a move away from a previous philosophy of avoiding minority stockholdings, but these stakes can be held without his having to manage his investments.

Connections needed: oil firms in Russia are desperately trying to find ways to export more oil from the country

Article Abstract:

Russia's huge oil reserves are restricted by inadequate pipelines and ports, so that only 2 million barrels!day, about one-third of production, can be exported. Eight different schemes, involving new pipelines and ocean routes, are discussed, which would help bring Russian oil prices up to world levels.
