Clothing and footwear in Italy

Article Abstract:

The clothing and footwear industry in Italy showed a slight recovery in 1994 and the trend is set to continue. Production of ready-made clothing rose to 185,500 t in 1994, against 174,600 t in 1993. Imports of ready-made clothing for the year rose by 15.6% in volume and 16.3% by value, with the three major suppliers being China, France and Belgium Luxembourg. Footwear production in 1994 rose 4.3% from 1993, with consumption up 12.7%. A detailed analysis of the clothing and footwear industry in Italy is presented.

Clothing and footwear in France

Article Abstract:

The French clothing industry achieved turnover of 173 billion French francs, compared with 182 billion French francs in 1992 and 180 billion French francs in 1993. Domestic consumption fell for the fourth consecutive year, and exports were weak. Manufacturers also suffered from strong competition. In the footwear industry, production in 1995 fell by 2% from 1994 to 151.7 million pairs, with turnover falling by 1% to 14.1 billion French francs. The only sector which did not experience a decline was slippers.
