Article Abstract:

Thailand will retain its dominance of the world rice market despite internal problems and challenges from rival exporters such as Vietnam. Thai rice farmers were angered when the price of benchmark rice fell from $340 a ton to $250. Other problems such as declining acreage and rising competition must be overcome with more mechanization, intensified efficiency, improved marketing and consolidation. Moreover, several signs such as the probable opening of the Japanese, Taiwanese and South Korean markets indicate that the Thai rice industry will survive its current difficulties.

New rules, but old attitudes

Article Abstract:

Thailand's new National Environment Act causes problems, despite being praised as being sweeping and progressive, because of lack of manpower and skills in the nation's much-ignored Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment to cope with the new approach. The new legislation represents attractive incentives as well as harsh sanctions for industry and society. The ministry has to be immediately rejuvenated to handle its new duties and begin dealing with many and varied environmental problems.
