Coming together, ten years on

Article Abstract:

Germany has changed a decade after reunification, and those parts of eastern Germany near the western part have benefited more than some areas further east. Jobs have disappeared from heavy industry and agriculture, but new jobs are available in western Germany. There are differences between eastern and western Germany despite the end of physical barriers, and this is partly due to different upbringing and lower wages in the east. Some inhabitants of eastern Germany also note that there were benefits to the older way of life, such as cheaper food, less crime, and higher levels of employment.

Growing together

Article Abstract:

Eastern and western Germany are very different after reunification, and working together for change is difficult. The union is financially dragging the west, while the east struggles to catch up to western standards of living. Both sides are willing to struggle in the name of unity, however.
