Patrick Manning was elected prime minister of Trinidad-Tobago, replacing A.N.R. Robinson. The manifesto of his party, the People's National Movement, emphasizes private business. Robinson managed to stimulate economic growth during his time as prime minister.

SAC of the US Air Force will be replaced by reduced, unified command from all of the military services. SAC made up two-thirds of the nuclear arsenal of the US, and it was guided by General Curtis LeMay.
