Connecting Europe's transition economies

Article Abstract:

Aggregate economic output in 26 European countries has declined 1.3% since the Russian financial crisis of 1998, and the economies in the Balkans and elsewhere may become unstable with the Kosovo conflict. Increased economic reform in Eastern Europe has been called for by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and a key ingredient to this may be privatization of the telecommunications industry. Elektrim of Poland is one of the state-controlled telecom companies in Eastern Europe that is being privatized, and Hungary and the Czech Republic are planning telecommunications privatization, as well.
