Conserving a monument of the industrial past

Article Abstract:

UNESCO has designated the buildings of the Volklingen Iron Works, Germany, a World Heritage Site. The vast, towering industrial site was active from the late 19th century but has been unused since 1986. The designation raises a number of issues including how best to present the site to visitors and how to ensure their safety. Architect Johann Peter Luth, who promotes and directs conservation work in the area, supports a policy of minimal intervention. He allows vegetation to grow unless it is causing a danger, and has posted warning sites only at the start of the visitor's tour.

An exhibition at the Guildhall Library in London, England displays some of the paintings by Robert Mason made during the Broadgate development. Mason's early paintings were dark, with a tragic quality. The Broadgate paintings retain the sombre quality. The work was commissioned by Stuart Lipton in 1989 and from a single painting developed into a seies of 150. Some show the individuals who took part in the Broadgate development but the most effective show the process of construction.
