Contending passions: unification issue dominates the campaign agenda

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's presidential candidates are campaigning largely on the issue of reunification with the mainland, though social and political stability are also important themes. Peng Ming-min of the Democratic Progressive Party, the only party-affiliated opponent to incumbent President Lee Teng-hui of the Kuomintang, says Taiwan is de facto an independent country. Lin Yang- kang and running mate Hau Pei-tsun want to quickly improve mainland ties, and bitterly criticize Lee. Other candidates' positions are outlined.

Gone native: the ruling KMT has turned itself into a Taiwanese party

Article Abstract:

The ruling Kuomintang in Taiwan is transforming itself into a fully Taiwanese institution under the leadership of President Lee Teng-hui. The party has revamped its policies and image, holding competitive elections and tolerating free speech, empowering the native born residents of the island. There are still some mainlander influences and the party's official attitude to the mainland is difficult to change. There are also still image problems relating to corruption and privilege.
