Could be worse: if Japan were, it might get a much-sough rate cut

Article Abstract:

The Bank of Japan released its Tankan business survey on June 9, 1995, to widespread disappointment, as the rising but still negative diffusion index is unlikely to herald the cut in interest rates many observers say the economy needs. The index, which measures sentiment about the economy among large companies, is at -16, up from -21 in Mar and -50 a year ago. Small companies continue to struggle, a bad sign, and the survey shows significant differences among industries. Managers seem unconcerned about the strength of the yen.

Dogfight over Tokyo: The U.S.-Japan air spat

Article Abstract:

Formal aviation talks between the US and Japan have resumed, but some are questioning why Japan should open up its skies when air services already show trade deficit with the US of $5.3 billion. The air business is ruled by a complex range of bilateral agreements, and the response by Washington has been to push for open skies, so that the market can decide what services are needed where.
